Project Charter Assignment 1

Assignment 1 Title : Printout Postcard for the theme “Malaysia, Truly Asia”

Project Start Date : 26 November 2008
Project Finish Date : 28 November 2008.

Project Manager : Nurul Farhana binti Musa

Website : http://mcg1014-1051109871.blogspot.com/

Project Objective :
Students are to create a multi-cultural event for a post card. The theme would be “Malaysia, Truly Asia” which is the official slogan for Malaysia Tourism. Students are to show the multi-cultural aspects of Malaysia culture or life as a positive feature to attract tourist into this country.

Approach :
Firstly, I go online and save some beautiful images that related to the postcard topic and have a look at some of the postcard example. And then I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 to finish up my first assignment.

What tools at Photoshop you use to edit the images?
I do use some of the basic tools such as, marquee, lasso, magic wound, etc. I also play with stroke and blur to make those pictures blend well.

Write here about the idea of your postcard, is it your own Idea or References (if you refer to someone else idea)?
Basically, my original idea was to use some trishaw, KLCC, and a group of people wearing traditional costume. But is doesn’t seem very cultural look as the topic is Malaysia, Truly Asia. So, I decided to choose beach – which show a lot like Malaysian weather, an old man flying his kite and an old building, Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, one of the famous landmark. I also refer to some pictures that I find in Google, but my roommates help me a lot in brainstorming those ideas.

Comment :

It is very hard for me to find very good images while staying in hostel because the internet is very slow. And my computer shut down a few times because of the black-out in the hostel block.

The Making of Assignment 1 - Malaysia Truly Asia

This is my step-by-step for this assignment.

Firstly. I edited the color of the first picture. But I only edited the blue and cyan using Hue/ Saturation mode. This is to enhance the sky - blue color.

And then I use lasso tool to take this image and bring it to the main document. I set the feather to 35 px to get smooth edges.

And as for this photo, I use magic wound to get rid of the sky around the kite. I also duplicate the layer, and the used Gaussian blur for the bottom layer to make those layer blend well.

For the text, I used Malaysian flag and make clip of the text so that I get the pattern of the flag on the text.

Finally, I stroke around the postcard to make some border.

And this is the outcome!

Tutorial 02

In this tutorial, there are many more techniques which been taught, such as,
  • Distructive & nondistructive methods of applying grayscale to an RGB image
  • Colorize a selection with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer using the Color blend mode
  • Perform a standard grayscale conversion process for comparison make grayscale image, use Hue/Saturation to edit individual color channels
  • Colorize an image with a Hue/ Saturation adjustment layer to look like a sepia tone
  • Draw a path with Pen Tool to make a selection, create new channel from selection
  • Feather the alpha channel selections with the Gaussian blur filter
  • Combine the alpha channels to fine tune the selection, colorize the selection
But as for me, I am not using all those techniques, I just apply some simple technique from the video provided.

For the second tutorial, I have to choose one of the picture given and edit it using the technique in the tutorial video.

This is the original picture which I chose to edit.

Then, I open the picture file in Photoshop.

For the first step, I have to create a new layer, and paint it with black. Then choose Color in the blending layer option in the layer palette as shown in the picture above.

Next, I wanted to color the t-shirt. I simply used Color Range to select the t-shirt. It makes me easy, instead od using Magic Wand. And I still using the same technique, create new layer, and use Color in the blending layer option - same as the first step just now. I can simply change the t-shirt color to any color I like.

For the following step, I want to change the car's color. I use the same step as changing the t-shirt color just now.

So, here is my final result of tutorial 2. Not reach the expectation, I know.

Tutorial 01

It is easy to learn Photoshop using the videos provided. The videos show many techniques in editing pictures. Such as ;

* using the selection tools
* knowing the hot keys in photoshop
* distort using free transforms' tool
* apply basic efx using filter

These are the steps that I used to finish up my tutorial 1.

The first step required me to put the guide in order to blur the center of the image as later, the starfish will be the main focus in the picture. During this step also, I need to use Gaussian blur and also apply feather to make the edge softer.

Then, drag down the starfish from the archive and duplicate it. Adjust the size using free transform to make the depth of field more obvious. More far, the smaller starfish would be.

Next, apply Gaussian blur to show great depth of field.

The next step, I put radial blur to show that the starfish is really falling down from the sky. But since the radial blur doesn't apply the negative value, I need to apply mask layer and delete the part which need to be focus on the starfish.

And then the halftone to make it not flat as poster, but more to real plasma tv on the wall. The actual step - select the blue part of plasma tv and then select Filter > Sketch > Halftone pattern and setting it a little bit. Then, drag it to the main image which is the scrapper with the starfishes ready in it.

After that, using the free transform tool, distort the tv accordingly to the wall.

Apply shadow to make it not look-alike poster. Play around with the opacity.

Lastly, make the shadow which drop from the tall building across the plasma tv. I have to use the marquee tool to make the shape of the shadow and fill it in with black color. Apply mask layer to let the black color only appear on the plasma tv, but not on the building. Apply Gaussian blur to soften the edges. And lastly play around with the opacity.

And this is my final result of this tutorial!
